Ambitions

I gently squeeze a firefly between my thumb and forefinger
It squirms for liberation

Others have named them “lightning bugs”
And see the segmented body of this tiny Prometheus
I imagine my self as Zeus,
I gently squeeze a firefly
It squirms for liberation,
But not for its own self but for those that he loves
Why else has such a creature taken on the light?

His friends and families, captive and bottled dry
And suffocating from injustices
But my heart hardens beyond my will,
And though I let him go I will pursue the bug again
Or know that some clever bird shall
Tear him apart.
